The Never ending Ouachita River

The Ouachita River originates in the Ouachita Mountains in Mena, Arkansas, runs into Lake Ouachita, Lake Hamilton, Lake Catherine, and continues all the way to Louisiana. Hot Springs, Arkansas, is one of the biggest cities that the Ouachita River borders. The 650 miles of the monster river’s shoreline makes it the 25th longest river in the United States.

Culture of the Ouachita River

The Hernando De Soto expedition made the first recorded mention of the Ouachita River in 1542. De Soto, a European explorer who sought to conquer land, engaged in battle with numerous Native American tribes that lived around the Ouachita River. De Soto and the rest of his followers were forced to escape the river by the Chickasaw tribe when the Native Americans defended their country. Up until 1803, the French controlled the river for the majority of that time. However, the United States acquired the river from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Thomas Jefferson ordered the Hunter-Dunbar expedition soon after buying Louisiana. The first steamboat to travel through the Ouachita River did so in 1819 as a result of this river investigation. Due to this, the river expanded into a significant commercial corridor, with steamboats from New Orleans even traveling up the river. Numerous tugboats still use the Ouachita River as a vital conduit for commerce today.
