A Texas Gem
Spanning 7,300 acres and plunging 95 feet deep, Lake Brownwood is a premier Texas lake destination. The lake borders quaint cities filled with antique shops and local restaurants, showcasing Texas’s finest small-town lake scene.
Essentials
Although Lake Brownwood offers privacy and picturesque views, it is just a short distance from the necessities. The lake is only 20 minutes from Gwinnett Medical Center and a little less than three hours from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
A Source of Sustenance
For nearly 100 years, Lake Brownwood has assisted in flood control and supplied drinking and irrigation water. The need for Lake Brownwood initially materialized in 1900 when a devastating flood struck Brown County. The locals knew they needed a way to contain the flooding of Pencon Bayou and its tributary, Jim Ned Creek. They also were interested in locating a water source for their homes, farms, and ranches. Fortunately, Lake Brownwood became the solution to both of these concerns.
In the late 1920s, Lake Brownwood construction commenced, impounding the Pecan Bayou and Jim Ned Creek delta. Skeptics doubted that the lake would ever fill to a full pool. However, in July 1932, a record-breaking flood rushed down the Pecan Bayou. As a result, the lake waters rose, spanning over 7,000 acres within a few days. Some of this water had to be released to finish building the dam, which was completed in early 1933. Today, Lake Brownwood tames the destructive flow of Pecan Bayou and serves as an invaluable local water source.
Fantastic Fishing and Relaxing Recreation
Since Texas features primarily mild winters, Lake Brownwood offers nearly year-round boating, water skiing, fishing, and jet skiing. Additionally, those who enjoy kayaking can drift down the Pecan Bayou Padding Trail—a 7.2-mile looped waterway trail surrounded by lavish trees and vibrant wildlife.
Situated on the south side of the lake, The Flat Rock Campground offers RV spots, tent camping, boat slips, picnic areas with grills, swimming areas, boat ramps, and a fishing pier. It’s a great place to host outdoor family lake gatherings.
Because Lake Brownwood showcases varied waterscapes, it boasts spectacular fishing prospects. The many coves, bays, and timbered areas provide plenty of spaces for fish to congregate. Although the lake is navigable by boat, it may be easier to access some of these tighter areas via canoe or kayak. While fishing, anglers can expect to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, green sunfish, flathead catfish, white bass, longear sunfish, white crappie, blue catfish, hybrid striped bass, and longnose gar.
