Guadalupe Gold
Lake Placid winds a path of 198 acres half a mile southwest of historic Seguin. The lake is a segment of the Guadalupe River between the dam at Lake McQueeney and Lakeview Drive. The Gaudalupe-Blanco River Authority manages it, but the community built around Lake Placid knows it best.
Essentials
Lake Placid is conveniently close to all the necessities. For medical services, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is a quick 10-minute drive from the lake. While local airstrips are available nearby, the closest major airport is San Antonio International, only 40 minutes away. There are numerous local markets and grocers nearby Lake Placid, but the Walmart Supercenter, 11 minutes away, is the closest big-box retailer.
River of Nuts
Seguin, just outside San Antonio, is one of the oldest settlements in Texas — founded just over a year after the Texas Revolution. It was a practical, well-placed waystation for Rangers on patrol. In addition, the area had long been inhabited by the Tonkawa Native Americans, who would harvest pecans from the banks and beds of the Guadalupe River. So it’s no wonder the town’s original name was Walnut Springs.
The people of Seguin keep this heritage alive today in their monuments and buildings. A 16-foot-long, 8-foot-wide behemoth, the world’s largest pecan rests in Seguin at the Pecan Museum of Texas. Not to be outdone, Seguin holds multiple pecan-themed records, including the world’s second-largest mobile pecan and oldest-largest pecan.
For thrill-seekers, ZDT’s Amusement Park is the place to be. Seguin’s first family entertainment center, the park hosts several rides, but one attraction steals the show: Switchback. The Switchback Rollercoaster is the “first modern wooden shuttle coaster” and owes its name to one of America’s first roller coasters.
Along with Seguin, the lake boasts several recreational opportunities. The stretch of the river is prime for wakeboarding, swimming, water skiing, fishing, and boating. One public boat ramp provides access to the lake.
These waters host a variety of fish species and several scenic vantage spots from which to drop your line, including bridges, banks, and dams. Anglers can reel in largemouth bass, spotted bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, crappie, and sunfish.
Clear Waters
Seguin teems with history and culture — all on Lake Placid’s doorstep. Lake living, like pecan pie, has never been so sweet.
