The Texas Hills

Canyon Lake is a suburban paradise with more than 80 miles of shoreline. A reservoir on the Guadalupe River in south-central Texas, the 8,230-acre lake is controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Situated within Comal County in the Texas Hill Country, Canyon Lake boasts the heavyweight nickname “Water Recreation Capital of the South.”

Essentials

The lake area conveniently provides many nearby essentials.  Christus Santa Rosa Hospital offers emergency medical services in New Braunfels, 20 miles away. Canyon Lake Airport is the closest airport and sits on the lake’s northern shore, and San Antonio International Airport is just 35 miles away. While a few general stores are available around the lake, the nearest Walmart Supercenters are about 20 minutes away in Bulverde, New Braunfels, and San Marco.

Canyon Depths

Before deemed Canyon Lake, the hilly region experienced several floods over the years. The canyon presented an opportunity for flood control, and the dam actively serves to protect the communities of Canyon City, Cranes Mil, Fischer, Sattler, Startzville, and Hancock. While the lake’s primary focus was as a security measure against floods, it would also provide drinkable water to surrounding communities. The dam’s construction began in 1958 and was not completed until four years later, in 1968. Rather fittingly, the dam was named Canyon Dam.

There’s a reason that it is called the “Water Recreation Capital of the South.” The lake area boasts 15 public boat ramps and eight public parks managed by the U.S. Corps of Engineers. There are also several nearby campgrounds and golf courses for visitors and residents to enjoy.  The lake features a yacht club and two marinas—with boats and jet skis available for rent. Outdoor enthusiasts can find trails for runners, hikers, bikers, and equestrians.

The waters are well-stocked with fish, and anglers can catch various species, including smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, Guadalupe bass, striped bass, white bass, and catfish. For novice anglers, fishing guides are available near and around the lake.

Homebound

With its stellar reputation and supreme location, Canyon Lake is a veritable powerhouse destination. Whether you’re looking to escape city living or simply searching for your next adventure, this is the place to be.
