Large and In Charge

Stretching 60 miles and covering 67,100 acres, Wheeler Lake in the Mountain Region of northern Alabama is the second-largest lake in the state. It is one of the few lakes that successfully houses many species of bass, making it a bass angler’s dream! With four million visitors yearly, it is a landmark to the state of Alabama!

Stairway To Heaven

Wheeler Lake is one of the nine reservoirs that make up the navigable “stairway” along the Tennessee River. The Muscle Shoals, a group of rocky outcroppings, made the lake unnavigable. Just before World War II, Tennessee Valley Authority Boats could now cross the Muscle Shoals thanks to the building of Wheeler Lake. General Joseph “Fightin” Joe Wheeler, who frequented the region during the war and afterward moved back there, gave it the name of this reservoir. Although navigation, flood control, and hydropower generation are the main uses of Wheeler Reservoir, its recreational options now draw millions of visitors annually!

An Angler’s Dream

Wheeler Lake draws bass anglers from all over the country because it is one of the few lakes that can sustain largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, and white bass. Bluegill, catfish, crappie, longear sunfish, redear sunfish, and sauger are other popular catches on Wheeler Lake. The distinctive terrain of Wheeler Lake contributes to its optimum aquatic habitat. Continued steep banks combined with a swift current create a haven for fish habitat. Because of the excellent fishing chances on Wheeler Lake, it holds a number of significant bass competitions each year. This lake ensures a good time while fishing!

An Array of Activities at Wheeler Lake

Because of the immense size of Wheeler Lake, swimming and boating are intertwined. A broad range of activities is available at Joe Wheeler State Park, including fishing, boat rentals at the marina, an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis, swimming, and hiking. Cabins, cottages, and camping sites are among the available lodging options, in addition to a resort lodge and meeting spaces. The campground offers camping with full hookups.

The largest city on the Wheeler Reservoir is Decatur, often known as “River City,” which is home to many activities throughout the year. Over Memorial Day Weekend, Decatur hosts the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic, which brings in many visitors annually. Decatur is also home to other events, such as the Spirit of America Festival and the Racking Horse World Celebration.

Near the Lake

Nature lovers will appreciate the 35,00-acre wildlife refuge, Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge which is conveniently located a few miles from the dam. This hosts thousands of geese, ducks, fish, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, and songbirds. This provides a safe sanctuary for these animals during the chilly winter months. Take a hike and visit these different animals in their natural habitat at the refuge!
