Reeling in the Fun: A Guide to Fishing on Dreher Island

Dreher Island is a popular fishing destination for anglers of all ages and skill levels. The lake is stocked with a variety of fish, including largemouth and stripers, catfish, bream, crappie, and yellow perch. The park’s six boat ramps and fishing pier make it easy for visitors to get out on the water and start fishing. 

Casting a line from the shore is also a great option, as the park’s 12 miles of shoreline offer plenty of opportunities for a successful catch. Fishing tournaments are held regularly on Dreher Island, and several local fishing guides are available for hire.

Camping on the Lake: 100x the Fun

If you’re looking for an unforgettable camping experience, Dreher Island has you covered. The park offers over 100 campsites, including RV sites, tent sites, and primitive camping options. The lakeside campsites provide picturesque views of the water, and the park’s amenities make camping comfortable and convenient.

Dreher Island’s grounds are well-maintained and offer a variety of amenities, including picnic tables, fire pits, and access to modern restrooms and showers. RV sites offer full hookups, including water, electricity, and sewage.

Every year, the park lends two islands, Spence and Dreher, for a stunning fireworks display over Lake Murray. Visitors can enjoy a day of boating and fishing, followed by a picnic on the beach or at one of the park’s designated picnic areas. The park also offers a playground for children, making it a fantastic family-friendly destination for the 4th of July.

In addition to the 4th of July festivities, Dreher Island hosts several other events throughout the year. The park’s annual Fall Festival is a popular event featuring live music, food vendors, and craft booths. And for nature enthusiasts, the park offers guided hikes and nature walks throughout the year, providing a unique and educational experience.

Beyond the Island: Must-See Attractions in & around the Area

While Dreher Island has plenty to offer on its own, there are also several must-see attractions in the surrounding area. The town of Chapin, just a short drive away, features charming boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. The South Carolina State Museum in Columbia is also a popular attraction, offering a fascinating look at the state’s history. 

For outdoor activities, the Congaree National Park and Harbison State Forest boast miles of hiking and biking trails. And for a taste of local flavor, the Columbia Food Tours serves up a unique culinary experience.

From the park’s shoreline, you may fish wherever you like. From our bridges, boat docks, or boat ramps, fishing is not permitted. In order to fish in Lake Murray, you must possess a current South Carolina fishing license.

The park does not provide any sort of on-site boat rentals. But, if you ask park employees, they can provide you a list of nearby shops that do offer boat, canoe, and/or kayak rentals.

Absolutely, you are allowed to swim anywhere along Lake Murray’s coastline. There isn’t a defined swimming area with lifeguards. You swim at your own risk. From bridges, boat docks, or boat ramps, swimming is not permitted.

There is a lot of extra parking available that can hold a boat trailer. When you arrive, park workers will be able to point these places out to you. Seek a ranger or other member of the park personnel.
