Icehouse Amphitheater

South of Lake Murray, Icehouse Amphitheater in Lexington is a classic outdoor live music venue. The venue puts on a variety of genres and events. Visitors may see a tribute band on Sunday or partake in a wine tasting on Wednesday — limitless options! Made in the style of a Greek amphitheater, the auditorium seats 900 people and hosts events rain or shine.

A theatre for and by the people, Icehouse Amphitheater started as a community project. Before it was a live music venue, the land it was built on was a shoe shop during the Civil War that changed hands often. Throughout its time, the property hosted an icehouse and propane company until bought by the Town of Lexington in 2012. The property was purchased through the town’s “Vision Plan” to revitalize downtown, and it became a local favorite. Visit in summer and fall, as Icehouse facilitates a Farmers’ Market supporting local growers and artists.

The Senate

In the heart of downtown Columbia, The Senate is doing more than passing laws. The Senate is touted as Columbia’s premier live music venue, and this badge is well deserved. The venue sits up to 1,200 people, and its 5,400 square foot space makes a great spot for weddings, concerts, and other events. Adult beverages, like beer, wine, and liquor, are available at the full bar. Although they heavily feature local music and artists, household-name celebrities like Morgan Wallen and Diplo have made cameos here. Likewise, they’re no strangers to comedy sets and dance parties — from disco to Taylor Swift.

Newberry Opera House

North of Lake Murray, the Newberry Opera House has delighted the wider Newberry area since its establishment in 1881. With ballets and theatric productions, the opera house catered to modern stereotypes of the upper class, but it is not as true to form as one might expect. Surprisingly, the venue hosts live music, and it features artists like Flava Flav, Willie Nelson, and Olivia-Newton John. Furthermore, they also put on ice shows, puppet acts, and comedy sets. Originally, Newberry Opera House acted as its name suggests, but they changed gears after the advent of silent films. The venue became a popular spot and continued to expand the entertainment available. The building displays some of the classic features of Victorian-era architecture through small intricacies. The location was restored in the 90s and boasts accessible services for individuals who are hard of hearing.
