Life on the Frontier

Lake Nocona has known otter names throughout its life. The potential for the lake to aid in matters of mining, municipal, and industrial purposes was noticed by 1959. Farmer’s Creek Dam began construction the same year and finished in 1960. Lake Nocona is also known as Farmer’s Creek Reservoir due to its connection with the dam.

The name Nocona owes its roots to Peta Nocona, who was a chief of the indigenous Comanche. He was an instrumental figure in the Texan frontier and was an especially eminent American enemy during the Indian Wars. His story is exciting: his marriage to a white woman, his wars with frontiersmen, and the alleged legend of his death. While official accounts say that he and his family died attempting to escape the aftermath of the Battle of Pease River, reputable reports from his son Quanah Parker suggest that he did not succumb until 3–4 years later by former injuries. Quanah was no less influential, as his mixed heritage allowed him to foster positive relations between settlers and native tribes.

Parks, marinas, fishing piers, and campgrounds dot the shores of Lake Nocona. One can also find public access boat ramps around the reservoir.

Lake Nocona is the fourth-best lake in Texas for bass fishing! Lake Nocona is teeming with largemouth, white, and striped bass. Not only these, but anglers can reel in blue catfish, channel catfish, and crappie. The lake also features structures like rip-rap and timber, which make excellent cover for fish.
