Moss Lake is a 380-acre lake in Northern Texas just outside of Gainesville. The location is an untapped, hidden treasure of Texas lake life; its pastoral pleasures are as tranquil as its sparkling waters.

Several smaller airfields dot the countryside in northern Texas, but the nearest major airport is the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, a little over an hour away. Medical health services are accessible at North Texas Medical Center in nearby Gainesville, 15 minutes away.

Hubert’s Home

Moss Lake’s story is inherently tied to the man for which it is named. Hubert M. Moss — a superintendent and former high school chemistry teacher — was a nature-lover who advocated for the construction of a lake for Gainesville. Moss believed that the lake would play an integral role in drinking water for the city, but it has not yet been used for this purpose. Although today it is more commonly known as Moss Lake, Hubert M. Moss Lake will always hold his legacy.

Before the completion of Fish Creek Dam in 1966, which allowed the impoundment of Moss Lake, Dessamae Lorrain, an archaeologist, recovered and preserved shards of pottery at dig sites from the indigenous tribes of the area.

Hubert M. Moss Lake is rich with three species of bass: largemouth, spotted, and white. Fishing here can also yield catfish, crappie, and sunfish.
