Peaceful Retreat in Alabama
Lake Wedowee, nestled in Clay and Randolph counties in eastern Alabama, beckons those who seek a serene escape from the chaos of city life. The 10,600-acre lake surrounds miles of pristine wilderness, offering a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike
Wedowee Creek
Lake Wedowee’s history dates back to the early 1800s when the Creek Indians inhabited the area. They named the creek that ran through the region “Wedowee,” which means “old water” in their native language. The creek became a significant landmark in the area, and over time, the region became known as Wedowee.
In the 1900s, the Alabama Power Company began exploring the potential for hydroelectric power in the region. By the 1960s, they began planning the construction of the R.L. Harris Dam. The construction of the dam would create a reservoir, which would not only provide clean energy but also offer recreational opportunities for the region.
Construction of the R.L. Harris Dam began in 1974 and was completed in 1983. The dam is an impressive feat of engineering, standing at 175 feet tall and stretching over 3,000 feet across the Tallapoosa River. The resulting lake, which covers over 10,000 acres and has over 270 miles of shoreline, was named Lake Wedowee in honor of the Wedowee Creek.
Today, Lake Wedowee remains an important source of clean energy for Alabama, providing power to over 44,000 homes, while also serving as a popular destination for outdoor recreation. Its rich history and stunning natural beauty continue to attract visitors from all over the country, making it a true gem of the south.
