Alabama’s Best

On the border of Alabama and Georgia, Lake Eufaula—known as the large bass capital of the world—has a staggering 45,180 acres and a 640-mile shoreline. There are fantastic camping locations for family outings in addition to the large amount of land and fishing. Fun fact: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in charge of managing the shoreline of Lake Eufaula.

Essentials of Lake Eufaula

There are several necessities at Lake Eufaula in addition to all the enjoyment. The Dothan Regional airport, which is about 50 miles from the heart of Eufaula, Alabama, is the closest airport. There is also the 24-hour Medical Center Barbour. For any grocery needs, a Walmart and Winn Dixie are both located around 20 minutes away.

The Origin of “Eufaula”

Around 1823, a group of Georgian men moved into Muscogee Indian land, and that is when Eufaula was born. The “Eufaula’s” was the name of the tribe that inhabited this area. The men chose this name, and the city grew as a result. In 1963, after many years had passed, the Walter F. George Dam built the dam. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built this dam to manage flooding, generate hydroelectric power, and make shipping canals navigable. Eufaula receives a variety of recreational opportunities from this dam, which is today known as Lake Eufaula and feeds into one of the biggest rivers in the country, the Chattahoochee.

Big Bass Capital of the World

Lake Eufaula is referred to as the “Big Bass Capital of the World,” as was already noted. This lake is a fisherman’s paradise. Largemouth bass, hybrid stripers, crappie, catfish, bluegill, and redear sunfish are just a few of the many fish found in the lake. Anglers find bass in abundance in the numerous boat docks and bushes along the coastline, allowing for a fantastic day of fishing! The largest bass ever caught in Lake Eufaula weighed an astounding 16 and a half pounds. Additionally, there are several fishing competitions, such as the yearly Humminbird Lake Eufaula Big Bass Classic. It seems like fish is on the menu tonight!

A Camping and Wildlife Bonanza

A family seeking a weekend camping break should head to Lake Eufaula! Florence Marina State Park, located more in Georgia, and George T. Bagby State Park and Lodge, located just north of Fort Gaines, are the two main locations for camping. Additionally, the Corps of Engineers offers camping areas close to the lake. Visit the Eufaula Wildlife Refugee, where you may see a variety of wildlife like alligators, blue herons, white-tailed deer, and more, in addition to all the outdoor camping fun! Lake Eufaula is perfect for those who love the outdoors and are seeking excitement!

A Natural Paradise at Lake Eufaula
