The Origin of “Walter F. George Lake”
Around 1823, a group of Georgian men moved into Muscogee Indian land, and that is when Walter F. George Lake was born. These men settled and developed the Georgian side of the Walter F. George reservoir. In 1963, after many years had passed, the Walter F. George Dam was built. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built this dam to manage flooding, generate hydroelectric power, and make shipping canals navigable. The major city in Barbour County receives a variety of recreational opportunities from this dam, which is today known as Lake Eufaula and feeds into one of the biggest rivers in the country, the Chattahoochee.
