The story of this 891-acre lake and its neighboring town, Coloma, began to unfurl in the early 1820s. Settled by farmers and lumbermen, this region was drawn by the potential of the Paw Paw River, a vital resource for milling grain and powering sawmills.

By 1895, the promise of the lake’s future as a premier resort was proclaimed in the pages of Chicago newspapers. As the 20th century dawned, an impressive array of 50 hotels and 10 dance pavilions emerged along the lake’s pristine shores.
