Thicker Than Water

Spanning 6,800 acres of water surface and 188 miles of shoreline, Jordan Lake boasts a reputation as being one of Alabama’s premier fishing locations. Not far from the capital city of Montgomery, this 18-mile lake on the Coosa River has drawn outdoor enthusiasts for decades.

Family Ties

Lake Mitchell sits less than 20 miles downstream from Jordan Lake, and their stories are as linked as they are to the Coosa River. The lake was formed in 1923 and named in honor of James Mitchell — a former President of Alabama Power. This feat would not have occurred without the undertakings of Reuben and Sidney Mitchell, a brother and sister team who played integral roles in Mitchell Dam’s creation. Following the impoundment of Jordan Dam on December 31, 1928, it heralded in the New Year bearing the maiden name of the siblings’ mother.

Tied not only to the Mitchells, Jordan Lake’s ties to Alabama’s legacy and history are intrinsic. An essential piece of Alabama’s contributions in the era of WWII, the hydroelectric facility at Jordan Dam can generate a capacity of 100,000 kilowatts.

Featuring two marinas and seven launches, Jordan Lake is also one of 11 Alabama Bass Trails lakes. For anglers looking to cast out a line, the lake hosts four species of bass, three species of catfish, and bluegill and crappie. Fishing opportunities are so prolific at Jordan Lake that it served as the 2004 Bass Master Classic Tournament location.

A Place To Call Home

Whether you’re looking to vacation, retire, or plant family roots, a home on Jordan Lake is sure to bear fruit.
