About Burntside Lake - Morse Twp

A Quick Trip to Canada

Less than an hour away from the Canadian border and only two hours away from the city of Duluth, Minnesota, Burntside Lake gives residents the cozy feeling of being tucked in the forest, while remaining close to civilization.

Big and Beautiful

Burntside Lake, stretching 74 miles of shoreline and over 7,000 acres, is said to be so clear, visibility to the floor can be seen as high as 20 feet above the water.

For hundreds of years, Burntside Lake was home to several different groups of native Americans, including the Ojibwe tribe. In the late 1800s, European settlers arrived mostly fur traders, until the area gold rush in 1865, although gold was hardly found. Today the logging industry serves as the primary business in the region.

To Infinity and Fish On

Just beyond Burntside Lake you can find Canadian Quetico Provincial Park, a reserve straddling the US-Canada border, know for trails and forests that "stretch to infinity."

Since 1912, Burntside Lake has been stocked with trout, and naturally contains hefty populations of walleye and northern pike, making the lake an ideal spot to drop a line in the water.

Three different companies in the Burntside Lake area offer dogsled tours, a unique, relaxing way to experience the beautiful Minnesota Northwoods.

Blueberries, Big Drops, and Burrr!

In the nearby town of Ely, Minnesota, the summer's premier event is the Ely Blueberry Fest, a three-day art and blueberry festival. It features local musicians, 260 different artists, and a whole lot of round, little blue fruit.

Soudan Underground Lab is a must-see experience for locals and visitors in the Burntside Lake area. Guests travel down a thrilling 2,341-foot descent in a cage, followed by a rail car ride through a fascinating mine shaft stuck in time.

The Ely Winter Festival held each February celebrates the chilliest time of the year with Ice Sculptures, window art, music, food, and winter fun!
