Henry County Through the Years
Henry County, which hosts Lake Dow, has a history that dates back more than 200 years ago. Georgia’s State Legislature established the county in 1821 with land ceded from the Creek Native Americans. The original size of Henry was much larger than it is today, running from Indian Springs State Park to Sandy Springs on the north side of Atlanta. Within a year, however, the county’s size dwindled, being portioned out to multiple smaller counties.
The initial inhabitants of Henry County included the Creeks, trappers, and traders, as much of it was still untouched wilderness. The economy was largely agricultural for much of the region’s history, with the residents trading labor for land. The economy flourished as new towns began sprouting up to support the growing railroad industry. Later, after a brief downturn in the 1860s, the railroad and cotton industries gave the county an economic resurgence. The economy continuously grew until 1920, when an invasive species and severe drought damaged farmers’ crops. It wasn’t until 1941, the beginning of World War II, that Henry started to recover from this downward economic spiral. People began moving to the area in droves to seek employment in Atlanta, and the county remains largely residential today. Eventually, Lake Dow and its communities were established within Henry County.
Lake Dow Recreation
Members of the two private Lake Dow communities can utilize the facilities and amenities located around the lake. For those who enjoy boating, the lake has several boat ramps surrounding the shore, including one at Pilgreen’s Steakhouse. Additionally, Allie Landing and Darwish Park both have boat ramps, as well as picnic areas. Residents can also use the lake for fishing for bass, crappie, and bluegill. For golfers, the Georgia National Golf Club is located right next to the lake, a private championship golf course.
Residents of the communities have priority for members of the Lake Dow Club, although it’s not a requirement. Those who are part of the Club have access to a swimming pool, indoor fitness facility, and two tennis courts. Members can exclusively use the amenities around the Club, as it is not open to the public.
