A Long, Long Time Ago
Although many people enjoy Lake Jordan today, the area has not always looked the same. Wetumpka, which means “rumbling waters” in the Native Creek language, has a story that begins well before any civilization was established in the area. 83 million years ago, Wetumpka was once the site of an enormous meteor crash. The impact caused the dissolution of several land and sea creatures as a result. The only reminder left of the crater now is a 4.7-mile rim to the east of Wetumpka. Eventually, people began to settle in the area.
Before the existence of Lake Jordan, the Wetumpka area was first occupied by the Creek people before European settlement. Later, the French had begun to settle in the area by the early 1700s. They built Fort Toulouse and assumed control over the area once they arrived. Britain began to take territory in the area as well as the French. As a result of growing tensions, war broke out between the two countries. The British forced the French to give up control of the area because of this war. After this conflict, the British held the area until the 1800s.
By the 19th Century, the area was incorporated into the United States as part of the Mississippi Territory. Then in 1836, Wetumpka was primarily occupied by American settlers and was officially founded as a city. After a decrease in population in the late 1800s, the city began to rebuild itself. It started by shifting from an economy based on steamboat transportation to one based on agriculture. The Alabama Power Company later constructed Jordan Dam in 1928. This would consequently benefit Wetumpka and Elmore County both economically and agriculturally. Additionally, the finished Dam created Lake Jordan as well.

Today, Lake Jordan is beloved for its recreational capabilities. Specifically, it has some of Alabama’s best fishing. In fact, the lake has been ranked in the top five for average pounds of bass caught per day and average weight caught! Anglers frequently fish for largemouth bass, white bass, and spotted hybrid bass. Bass fishing is particularly successful in the spring and fall. The best baits for bass include willow-leaf spinnerbaits, topwater chuggers, and walking baits. In addition to bass, you can find sunfish, crappie, and multiple types of catfish.
