Follow the Mississippi River an hour southeast of the Twin Cities to a land of enchantment known as Pepin. Lake Pepin, itself, is a widening of the river where you will find fabeled river towns such as Pepin, Maiden Rock and Bay City facing west toward Minnesota across this very special and history-filled water body.
The lands are lush with green pastures set against craggy rock cliffs and bending hills. Peaceful hamlets just a few miles from the big river are home to many artisans who have an ample supply of visitors from Minneapolis, St. Paul and Eau Claire. They are drawn to these simple and breathtaking surroundings to melt off some of their stress, and make good customers for those who live here and derive their income from their creativity.
Waterfront properties along the main river and can have gorgeous views and will be expensive, but you will find much more affordable lakeshore and riverfront real estate on water bodies like Mirror Lake and the Chippewa River just a few miles to the east. Modovi, Eau Galle, Rock Falls, Arcadia and Independence are a few of the surrounding towns to take a look for those types of properties.
 Pepin, Wisconsin: Laura Ingalls Wilder Days are held each September to honor the towns most famous citizen. She lived here with her family in the 1870s and wrote about the area in her book: "Little House in the Big Woods."
