About Flathead Lake

Massive Lake in the Western United States

Flathead Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes west of the Mississippi River. Its glittering blue waters are a compliment to the tree-lined shores and beautiful lakeside estates.

Bigfork is the largest town on the lake. It offers restaurants, shops, schools, and other city conveniences.

Kalispell is just north of the lake, where there are more shopping and dining options along with Kalispell City Airport and Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

Over 120,000 Acres of Water

Flathead Lake covers an impressive 122,560 acres with 185 miles of shoreline. It stretches 28 miles long and 15 miles wide.

The Swan River and Flathead River provide the lake with crystal-clear waters. Created by glaciers, the lake has an impressive depth of 371 feet. Beyond its shores, you will see the outline of the Rocky Mountains.

A Lake-Lover’s Dream

These pristine waters are a never-ending host of lake activities. Many spend their time on pontoons, powerboats, and jet skis.

Parasailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, diving, and hydro biking are its most famous watersports. In the nearby rivers, white-water rafting is a hit.

Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish, including lake trout, northern pike, bass, whitefish, and yellow perch.

Big Arm Island has a pebble beach where you can suntan, swim, or picnic. Wild Horse Island is the largest lake. It has a variety of trails that can be hiked or explored on horseback.

Nature Watching

Big Horse Island is habited by deer, bighorn sheep, bears, and coyotes, along with 75 species of birds. Around the Bird Islands, you will see herons, geese, osprey, and eagles.

Legend has it that a 20 to 40-foot loch-ness monster roams the waters of Flathead Lake. The eel-like creature has been given the nickname Flathead Nessie.
