A Scenic Escape in Southwestern Minnesota

Lake Shetek’s distance from the city has made it a popular escape among the people of Minnesota. There are marinas, restaurants, and shops around the lake, so almost anything you could need is nearby.

Slayton is a short drive from the lake, where there is a greater selection of establishments, including the Murray County Medical Center. The Sioux Falls Regional Airport and Sanford Hospital are approximately 90 miles away.

Covering Over 3,500 Acres

Lake Shetek is the largest lake in Southwest Minnesota, covering a total of 3,598 acres.

Around the lake, you will find inlets, coves, and several large islands. The waters connect to Fremont Lake and Bloody Lake. The surrounding community is called “The Lakes,” where you will also find Fox Lake, Lake Sarah, and Round Lake.

Boating, Fishing, Swimming, and More

Lake Shetek is a popular host of pontoons, speed boats, jet skis, kayaks, canoes, and sailboats; with the boating comes water skiing, tubing, and wakeboarding. The lake holds various fish, including northern pike, walleye, black crappie, channel catfish, and yellow perch.

Dock your boat on Valhalla Island to dine or drink at Pelican Cove or Key Largo. It is also home to Shetek Marine, Valhalla Campground, and a large beach.

Lake Shetek State Park

Lake Shetek State Park features 14 miles of hiking trails and five miles of snowmobile trails. It has many water-access points and offers kayak and canoe rentals.

Over 100 species of birds pass through the park, so it is a prime location for birdwatching. Other animal sightings include moose, wolves, bears, and bald eagles.
