I've been selling lake properties - along with my wife Sandy - across most areas of Minnesota and Western Wisconsin for over 20 years. Many of our early years in real estate were spent as lakeshore specialists on the nearly 2,000 lakes surrounding Minneapolis and St. Paul, but since Sandy and I now live in Grand Rapids - along with our two kids and dog (Ollie) - I try to stay a little closer to home when possible.
The Itasca County Area has about 1,000 lakes of its own, of which many have incredible water quality and clarity. It is truly a northwoods paradise, set amongst the Chippewa National Forest, and with pristine seclusion hard to match anywhere. On top of that, the prices are still quite reasonable in this north central area of Minnesota, and proximity to Duluth, Bemidji and the Twin Cities is excellent. As you can see from some of the listings here on the Itasca County page, decent lake cabins can still be found in the $150,000 to $250,000 range...and lake homes in good condition generally don't get much higher than $400,000-$600,000, with many of them much lower.
The Pokegama Lake Chain - made up of the Mississippi River and several other water bodies - is the largest expanse of water near Grand Rapids, for those who enjoy day-long boating opportunities and limitless recreational waters near the edge of town. Although plenty of cabins still exist here, there are hundreds of lakeshore homes along the Pokegama's sandy shores, and many of them are of executive quality. Several restaurants and drinking establishments are accessible by boat, and Pokegama Golf Course is an idyllic setting perched over the clear waters.
Grand Rapids is a bustling community, and has become the hub destination in this part of the world. Here, you can still own a lake home or cabin that feels like it is in the middle of nowhere, but you'll have great medical facilities, extensive shopping, numerous eating establishments and plenty of recreational and cultural opportunities within a 15-30 minute drive. And with so many lakes, and so much public land, recreational enthusiasts have nearly limitless opportunities for endless exploration.
